Knowledge exists in ecological systems where there is mutual fertilization of information, ideas, and inspiration.
The ecological metaphor emphasizes that organizations behave like organic systems; the greater their diversity, the more adaptive they become, and therefore, the more resilient. This is also how knowledge ecology operates. The assumption is that knowledge is dynamic, in constant flux, and is primarily the product of social activity through which people, teams, organizations, and communities develop.
Conversation is at the heart of knowledge ecology, whether it's face-to-face conversation or virtual conversation, on intranets or the internet. The concept serves to remind us that knowledge cannot be managed in the same way as tangible assets.
