Metadata is a tool that enables us to describe documents, data, and other information items using structured data. And Metatorial is a concept used to denote operations related to Metadata and its structure.

Several different categories together constitute and build the Metadata:

  • Navigation characteristics - A category that serves us in building hierarchical navigation and direct access. Through these characteristics, we define orientation within the information.

  • Management characteristics - A technical category that includes the author's name, item creation date, update date, etc. Characteristics through which we manage the operations performed on the item.

  • Content type characteristics - A category containing the taxonomic characteristics of the item, such as subject, client, product, supplier, project type, structure type, etc. Together with navigation characteristics, it defines the item.

  • Internal structure characteristics - Include the item's title, description, and body of the item. Used to define uniform templates for well-defined content items.

The management characteristics and internal structure characteristics are general and identical across all organizations. In contrast, the navigation characteristics and content type characteristics must be built and tailored for each organization according to its specific needs and organizational taxonomy.

Based on the book by Bob Boiko, titled "Content Management Bible."
