Virtual Brainstorming (Jam Session) is a concept borrowed from the musical field. In the musical domain, this is a gathering where all participants contribute from their musical knowledge, thereby creating new knowledge or a new, synchronized creation.
A virtual JS is a virtual meeting designed to create new knowledge. Unlike discussions in a professional community, the JS focuses on working on some virtual item: this item can be a document, a list of ideas, an image, software code, or any other item that all users can modify, add feedback to, or contribute additional knowledge about others' changes, and advance the shared product and knowledge for the group. The virtual environment suitable for JS enables communication between people and the tracking of outputs and their development across different versions.
In its outputs, the JS somewhat resembles face-to-face brainstorming, but it differs from it fundamentally and therefore has several advantages:
There is no geographical location limitation.
There is no need to gather all people at the same time and in the same place.
The nature of the discussion is not "quick and done" - there is an opportunity to delve deeper into the material, read documents, or delve into software code.
Problems of status or different personality types are less significant.
There is no problem of inefficient time utilization due to "airtime" limitations in meetings.
