Human Empowerment in an AI generation- it's our responsibility

walking

KMGN, KM AI course. Session 22- nearly the end... Today I lead the conversation on our future- human beings, in an era of AI.

Our understandings are changing again and again. If we thought that robots would be in charge of routine work a few years ago, and we as humans will continue being responsible for decision-making, today we know that is not the case. Nor are we better at recognizing objects in pictures. AI machines are better year after year in text understanding- turning natural language into structured queries, preparing knowledge graphs, suggesting folders' best organization, pointing out main points, summing content, and more. So even there, we probably will not rule within a few years. Emotions recognition and showing affection were our territories as human beings; however, we also find great AI applications and robots doing a better job than we do. Machines produce even creative art and music. So, where does that leave us?

There (yet) are many tasks that AI ML does not perform. Dealing with ethics, designing policies, drawing new directions and strategies are only a few examples, and there are much more.

Things, however, are changing, and they will continue to change. And even though we do not know what many of these changes will look like, we must prepare ourselves: as a society, as organizations, and as individuals. As a society, we must put much more effort in dealing with ethical challenges and in policy designing where we do not want machines ruling. We have to draw government-based education programs.

As organizations, we have to prepare in three levels:

  1. Educate all employees to better digital and data orientation, critical thinking, teamwork, and learn how to learn.

  2. We have to upskill a lot of our workforce when we see the opportunities entering the door. There won't be enough of the required people outside, and we must also rely on upskilling the current people.

  3. We must re-engineer the job roles in our organization. To break them down to pieces (as Susskind had suggested already years ago) and rebuild them so that some tasks are performed by experts, some by apprentices, some by people with no skills, etc.

The combination of these three will give organizations that do prepare a great advantage towards AI.

And as individuals- we can also prepare for the future by:

  1. Learning

  2. Seeking opportunities

  3. Daring to jump in.

At the end of the day, there is a great future out there, and it is our responsibility as a society, as organizations, and as individuals, to utilize it and end up smiling 🙂 .
