Tacit Knowledge Definition

Defining in general, and, defining tacit knowledge in particular, can be challenging for several reasons:

  1. Diverse Schools of Thought: Various perspectives lead to differing definitions.

  2. Romanticizing Tacit Knowledge: In a professional context, many of us view tacit knowledge as the treasure trove hidden in experts' minds, making it hard to find a universally satisfying definition.

  3. Respect for KM Giants: We often feel compelled to stick with the definitions provided by past knowledge management giants, even when they represent the past and don't take into consideration new developments.

So, what can we do? One strategy could be to avoid defining it altogether. However, definitions are crucial as they establish boundaries, provide clarity, and help develop a common language.

My Suggestion:

  • Balance: Create a definition that balances explainability, accuracy, and simplicity.

  • Inclusivity: Consider embedding multiple schools of thought.

Based on these principles, I propose defining tacit knowledge as:

"Knowledge that we are not aware of that we know, or find challenging to express and explain.

Note: Some regard this state at the individual level, while others consider it at the organizational level."

What do you think? Do you have any ideas for improvement?
