The Next Era of Knowledge Management: Four Strategic Shifts

Today, in the Knowledge Management Global Network (KMGN) course "From Strategy to Impact", I had the privilege of leading a session on AI as a KM Game Changer.
The discussion started with a simple premise:
The future of KM will not arrive overnight.
Instead, we may evolve through three horizons:
🔹 Same KM, improved execution
🔹 Augmented KM, enabled by human-AI collaboration
🔹 Strategic KM, creating competitive advantage
But how do we move from one horizon to the next?
Four strategic shifts may help us get there.
First, from managing organizational knowledge to orchestrating both world knowledge and unique organizational knowledge. As AI democratizes access to information, differentiation will increasingly come from what only the organization knows.
➡️ As KMers, we should invest in identifying, preserving, and nurturing the organization's unique knowledge, yet connecting to the outside.
Second, from expert knowledge to expert capabilities. For the first time, expertise can be transformed directly into AI-enabled decision support embedded where work happens.
➡️ As KMers, we should capture critical human expertise and help transform it into scalable AI agents, turning them into organizational capabilities.
Third, from knowledge sharing to knowledge creation. KM has an opportunity to expand its focus from capturing and reusing knowledge toward discovering, connecting, generating, and innovating through human-AI collaboration.
➡️ As KMers, we should institutionalize mechanisms that support continuous human-AI augmented knowledge creation.
And finally, from strategy supported by knowledge to strategy shaped by knowledge. Knowledge may increasingly help organizations identify opportunities, redefine their value propositions, and shape future directions.
➡️ As KMers, we should actively participate in knowledge-based value proposition design and strategic conversations.
The future of KM is unlikely to be a destination we suddenly reach.
It will be built through the strategic shifts we choose to make today ✨
