Maybe it is time to stop calling ourselves Knowledge Managers.

For years, we have talked about managing knowledge — and struggled to explain what exactly that means.
Perhaps a better term is emerging: Knowledge Engineer.

We already speak naturally about software engineers, data engineers, and AI engineers. So why not knowledge engineers?

After all, we don't really "manage" knowledge.
We design the conditions and mechanisms for knowledge to be created, captured, structured, documented, connected, shared, retained, reused — and increasingly, embedded into AI and the flow of work.
That sounds much more like engineering to me.

The term Knowledge Engineer is not new. It has existed for decades, mainly in expert systems and AI. But perhaps its time has finally come — with a broader meaning.

Not engineering technology.
Engineering knowledge into organizational capability and value.

I have already taken one small step: I updated my LinkedIn profile to include Knowledge Engineering among what I do.
Could Knowledge Engineer be the next evolution of our profession?
