ISO 30401: More Than a Standard. A North Star for KM Excellence

In this week’s session of the Knowledge Management Global Network (KMGN) course "From Strategy to Impact", I had the privilege of leading the session and discussing how ISO 30401 can be used not merely for certification, but to strengthen and elevate any KM strategy.

The standard offers a practical framework for building KM programs that truly serve organizational success.

A few key reminders from the session:

🔹 Start with the organization’s needs.

Always anchor KM in business objectives, opportunities, and risks (4.3). KM is not about knowledge activities. It is about organizational value.

🔹 Ensure the full management system works together.

Excellence requires attention not only to KM itself, but also to the surrounding elements: leadership (5), planning (6), support (7), operation (8), performance evaluation (9), and improvement (10).

🔹 Address knowledge in all its dimensions.

Successful KM integrates (4)

  • direct KM processes and the broader knowledge culture and environment

  • tacit knowledge, explicit knowledge, and knowledge embedded in products and services.

🔹 Define strategic KM guidelines (1).

At the strategy level, clear principles and guidelines help overcome barriers and enable consistent progress.

The bottom line is simple.
We all need the standard:
To learn how to build and operate KM effectively.
To understand what excellence looks like so we can continuously improve.
And for organizations already excelling, to gain recognition through certification.

KM needs excellence.
ISO 30401 gives us a structured way to move in that direction.

Proud to lead a company that has maintained Knowledge Management standard certification for 11 consecutive years ⭐️.
