LXP -The next generation of e-learning systems
1 May 2023
Until now, the field of e-learning has been dominated by Learning Management Systems (LMS), which focus on the management, documentation, tracking, reporting, automation, and transfer of educational courses, training programs, or learning and development programs. However, in recent years, a new generation of e-learning management systems called Learning Experience Platforms (LXP) has emerged.
What are LXPs, exactly? They are user-centered learning platforms that enable users to discover new learning opportunities and personalize their learning experiences. These systems offer innovative learning experiences that allow learners to consume information in line with their occupations and the skills they require across different and varied fields.
There are several advantages of LXP platforms:
First, they are designed to develop a "learning experience" for learners. The systems are designed in an attractive way that appeals to learners and enables them to easily choose accessible and available content. Additionally, e-learning materials can be produced in short, fast, and small content units, which can run well on mobile devices, tablets, and laptops and can appear in a variety of formats such as videos, blogs, games, quizzes, simulations, podcasts, or a collection of slides.
Second, the systems enable the creation of learning communities around specific content, promoting peer learning.
Third, through their Artificial Intelligence (AI) capabilities, these systems can curate high-quality learning content from a variety of sources, such as YouTube, Ted, Coursera, and others, and compile them into a vast catalog of topics that matches the learners' interests. This way, learners have access to a diverse array of content that aligns with their preferences. Moreover, the systems personalize the learning experience by recommending related content based on the learners' recent consumption patterns.
Forth, unlike traditional learning methods where the content is predetermined, LXP platforms empower learners to control their learning journey by allowing them to choose what they want to learn at their own pace. The systems do not dictate learning goals or the content learners must study. Instead, they offer the flexibility to follow a development path that caters to their individual needs and preferences.
And last, LXP platforms are designed with the instructor's flexibility in mind, catering to the modern dynamic learning environment, including gamification-based learning. The systems are adaptable to various learning styles and offer a wide range of features that allow instructors to create an interactive and engaging learning experience for their students.
In summary, the emergence of LXP platforms represents a paradigm shift in e-learning, emphasizing user engagement and personalization of the learning experience. These platforms offer a range of advantages, including access to a wide variety of high-quality learning content, peer learning opportunities, and flexibility for learners and instructors alike. However, it's important to note that LXP platforms should not be seen as a replacement for LMS systems but rather as a complementary layer that can enhance the learning experience. Ultimately, each organization must carefully consider their goals and requirements before deciding on the type of e-learning management system that is right for them.
